Course Highlights

This is an online continuing education course for Contractors registered in the State of Rhode Island. It provides a comprehensive, three-part learning experience covering:

  1. Part I: 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) With Rhode Island Amendments
  2. Part II: Energy Efficient Windows, Skylights, and Doors
  3. Part III: Safety And Health Programs in Construction

This course emphasizes Rhode Island-specific residential code requirements, energy-efficient building practices, construction safety and health programs, and practical jobsite applications.

Part I – 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) With Rhode Island Amendments: This section covers key definitions, sections, articles, examples and tables of the IRC, aka, The International Residential Code. This course includes applicable Rhode Island State amendments in addition to the requirements of the 2021 International Residential Code. It encompasses chapters two till four of the IRC 2021, whereby each chapter is thoroughly discussed, from building planning through structural systems, and foundations. The following chapters, are briefly discussed below and illustrated in this course:

  • Chapter 2 – Definitions: Establishes terminology used throughout the code, including Rhode Island amendments for consistent interpretation.

  • Chapter 3 – Building Planning: Covers safety, structural integrity, and livability, including Rhode Island–specific requirements.

  • Chapter 4 – Foundations: Addresses foundation design, soil, drainage, and frost protection, including Rhode Island frost depth and soil conditions.

Part II – Energy Efficient Windows, Skylights, and Doors: This section introduces energy-efficient windows, doors, and skylights in residential buildings. It covers energy-efficiency labels and performance measures such as U-factor, SHGC, visible transmittance, air leakage, and light-to-solar gain. Participants will also learn how frame materials, glazing, gas fills, spacers, operating types, storm windows, coverings, and treatments affect energy performance. These concepts support better product selection, lower heating and cooling costs, and reduced environmental impact.

Part III – Safety And Health Programs in Construction: This section introduces the seven core elements of recommended safety and health programs in construction. It emphasizes effective management leadership and explains how promoting worker participation helps identify hazards, strengthen communication, and create safer jobsites. Participants will learn how collaboration between management and workers supports the successful development and implementation of an effective safety and health program.

This online interactive video presentation is intended for contractors, building professionals, inspectors, and other technical personnel interested in learning about the international residential code, energy and safety in construction. Participants will learn insights into the most recent updates, with real-world examples that clarify how the code is applied in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. This course is designed to enhance knowledge of IRC compliance, safety practices, and efficient energy system design.
