2021 IPC and the Changes from 2018

This is a State Board-approved online continuing education course for Journeyman and Master Plumber licensed in the State of Virginia. It is designed to offer a comprehensive overview of the 2021 edition of the International Plumbing Code (IPC), providing plumbers and non-plumbers with an in-depth understanding of its structure, purpose, and practical application.
This online IPC interactive presentation covers key definitions, sections, articles, examples and tables of the IPC, aka, International Plumbing Code, and a summary of 2021 changes and updates. It encompasses all fourteen chapters of the IPC 2021, whereby each chapter is thoroughly discussed, from general installation requirements to specialized systems and emerging technologies. The following chapters, are briefly discussed below and illustrated in this course:
- Chapter 1 – Scope and Administration: Establishes provisions for the application, enforcement and administration of subsequent requirements of the code.
- Chapter 2 – Definitions: Provides the repository of the definitions of terms used in the body of the code. Codes are technical documents, and every word, term and punctuation mark can impact the meaning of the code text and the intended results.
- Chapter 3 – General Regulations: Contains safety requirements for the installation of all types of plumbing and non-plumbing fixtures.
- Chapter 4 – Fixtures, Faucets and Fixture Fittings: Regulates the minimum number of plumbing fixtures that must be provided for every type of building.
- Chapter 5 – Water Heaters: Includes the design, approval and installation of water heaters and related safety devices.
- Chapter 6 – Water Supply and Distribution: Provides the supply of potable water from both public and individual sources to every fixture and outlet so that it remains potable.
- Chapter 7 – Sanitary Drainage: Presents the materials, design and installation of sanitary drainage piping systems and connections made to the system.
- Chapter 8 – Indirect/Special Waste: Covers drainage installations that require an indirect connection to the sanitary drainage system.
- Chapter 9 – Vents: Reviews the requirements for vents and venting. Venting protects every trap against the loss of its seal.
- Chapter 10 – Traps, Interceptors and Separators: Focuses on the design requirements and installation limitations for traps. Requirements for the design and location of various types of interceptors and separators are provided.
- Chapter 11 – Storm Drainage: Regulates the removal of storm water. The proper installation of a storm drainage system reduces the possibility of structural collapse of a flat roof and prevents damage to the footings and foundation of the building.
- Chapter 12 – Special Piping and Storage Systems: Sets the requirements for the design, installation, storage, handling and use of non-flammable medical gas systems, including inhalation anaesthetic and vacuum piping systems, bulk oxygen storage systems and oxygen-fuel gas systems used for welding and cutting operations.
- Chapter 13 – Non-potable Water Systems: Discusses the design and installation of non-potable water systems, including rainwater harvesting systems.
- Chapter 14 – Subsurface Graywater Soil Absorption Systems: Outlines the design and installation of subsurface graywater soil absorption systems for the disposal of on-site non-potable water such as greywater.
