Uniform Dwelling Code (WI Ch. SPS 375, 321 & 322)
This is an online continuing education course designed for Dwelling Contractor Qualifier, Commercial Building Inspector, Manufactured Home Installer and UDC-Construction Inspector licensed in the State of Wisconsin. The course provides a comprehensive overview of Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapters SPS 375 (Definitions and General Requirements), SPS 321 (Construction Standards), and SPS 322 (Energy Conservation), with emphasis on their practical application in residential construction, life safety, fire protection, and energy efficiency compliance.
This online interactive video presentation examines key provisions related to fire-resistive construction, exits and fire escapes, structural design requirements, residential construction standards, insulation requirements, thermal envelope performance, ventilation, and energy conservation measures. Participants will gain an understanding of how these regulations establish minimum standards intended to protect occupant safety, improve building performance, and ensure durable and code-compliant construction practices. The course is divided into three parts:
Part I focuses on Chapter SPS 375, which contains definitions and general safety requirements applicable to older buildings and structures. Participants will review classifications of fire-resistive, ordinary, mill, and frame construction; fire-resistive doors and windows; fire escapes; stairways; standpipes; and related fire safety provisions. The presentation explains how these requirements support life safety and fire protection in existing buildings and places of employment.
Part II reviews Chapter SPS 321, which establishes construction standards for one- and two-family dwellings. Participants will examine design loads, structural materials, fastening requirements, exits and egress systems, stairways, fire separation requirements, foundations, wall and roof construction, and related structural safety provisions. The course highlights how these standards establish safe and durable residential construction practices throughout Wisconsin.
Part III examines Chapter SPS 322, which governs energy conservation requirements for one- and two-family dwellings. Participants will explore insulation requirements, thermal envelope design, HVAC efficiency standards, air leakage control, vapor retarders, ventilation requirements, and energy compliance methods. The presentation explains how energy conservation standards improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, moisture control, and long-term building performance.
This online interactive video presentation is intended primarily for contractors, builders, construction professionals, code officials and other technical personnel who are interested in learning more about Wisconsin residential construction standards, fire safety regulations, and energy conservation requirements necessary for code compliance, inspection, and safe building practices.
This continuing education interactive video presentation is intended to provide Dwelling Contractor Qualifier, Commercial Building Inspector, Manufactured Home Installer and UDC-Construction Inspector licensed in the State of Wisconsin with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- To identify the scope, purpose, and application of Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapters SPS 375, SPS 321, and SPS 322.
- To describe classifications of fire-resistive, ordinary, mill, and frame construction as defined in Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter SPS 375.
- To recognize fire protection requirements related to fire escapes, fire-resistive doors and windows, stairways, standpipes, and related life safety systems.
- To explain structural design requirements related to loads, materials, fastening methods, and accepted construction practices for one- and two-family dwellings.
- To recognize requirements governing exits, egress windows, stairways, balconies, and emergency escape provisions designed to protect occupant safety.
- To describe fire separation, fireblocking, smoke detection, and related residential fire safety requirements.
- To identify construction standards applicable to foundations, floors, walls, roofs, and structural framing systems.
- To explain energy conservation requirements related to insulation, thermal envelope performance, vapor retarders, air leakage control, and ventilation systems.
- To recognize HVAC efficiency standards, duct sealing requirements, and energy compliance methods used in residential construction.
- To understand installation and documentation requirements for insulation materials, fenestration products, and thermal performance systems.
- To recognize how compliance with Wisconsin construction standards, fire safety regulations, and energy conservation requirements supports occupant safety, structural durability, energy efficiency, and fire protection.
