HVAC Essentials for Contractors and Technicians
Iowa HVAC Technicians CE Courses
Course Highlights

This is a State Board-approved online continuing education course for Master and Journeyman Plumbers licensed in the State of Iowa. This online interactive video course presents the principles and theory of refrigeration, its basic components, and an overview of its installation and maintenance procedures. In addition, this course provides key knowledge information on ducts and ventilation systems as well as a brief guidance on air cleaners for residential use.

Part I provides an overview of refrigeration principles, system components, refrigerants, and associated equipment. It covers heat transfer principles, identifies refrigeration system components and their applications, and outlines the procedures for servicing and troubleshooting equipment.

Part II of the presentation covers the aspects of selecting and installing air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment. It also describes the individual components required in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Finally, it provides the fundamental electrical knowledge needed to install, maintain, and repair air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

Part III of this course presents the types of duct systems, duct system construction, and how duct systems are sized. It also describes how duct systems are balanced, the two types of ventilation systems, and the tools and materials used to evaluate system operation.

Part IV of the course explores residential air cleaners, emphasizing the importance of controlling indoor air pollution by addressing pollutant sources and enhancing ventilation. It also highlights the role of air-cleaning devices when these measures are insufficient. It also examines types of pollutants, key factors in selecting air cleaners, device performance, comparison metrics, and findings from studies on their health effects.

This online interactive presentation is intended primarily for HVAC/R contractors, conditioned air contractors, residential contractors, designers and other technical personnel interested in learning more about the essentials of HVAC systems as detailed in this outline.
